Our Story
Our founder, Margie Jetton, has been in the Insurance business for over 20 years, specializing in the Senior Market. During that time, she heard comments and horror stories from her clients about being taken advantage of by service providers, repairmen & even investment counselors. Over the years, it was obvious that these problems were getting worse, not better, and that the scams being used were growing more devious and sophisticated.
What’s more, these unscrupulous business practices are now not only targeting the elderly, but newcomers, women, young families... everyone is falling prey.
Identity theft, sex crimes, pornography, burglaries, assaults…
You can’t even pick up a paper, watch TV or listen to the radio without hearing about terrible things happening all around us. Margie decided something needed to be done. She started by calling ads in a local paper and asking the owners if they would be interested in forming a "club" of responsible businesses who would prove their worthiness by agreeing to undergo criminal background checks. "I will never forget that day!", Margie remembers. "I made twelve calls in about an hour, and out of the twelve, seven business people told me they would not be able to pass a background check!"
These were service people who were advertising in the newspapers & phone books & more importantly, already accessing people’s homes and property! What's more, some were members of the Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau. This revelation made Margie even more determined. She believed consumers should have the right to know who they are letting into their home or wallet, and businesses should have a way to prove they are worthy of their patronage.
This concept has evolved into today’s Better Consumer Choices. Businesses often spend thousands of dollars each year on advertising that doesn't prove anything. We believe it is time for businesses to begin directing some of their budget to consumer protection. We also believe that consumers need to be more cautious and aware of who they are supporting. Only businesses who can pass a 20 point background evaluation can become members of Better Consumer Choices. We can then promote these businesses as being worthy of your patronage. It's just good stewardship to spend your money carefully and seek businesses that deserve your trust.

What is Better Consumer Choices?
Better Consumer Choices is a Consumer Protection and Business Referral Co-op. We perform background checks and pre-screening on responsible businesses who are willing to meet our standards of safety and trustworthiness.
Better Consumer Choices then proudly promotes these businesses to consumers through many forms of media, making our communities safe and desirable places to live and conduct business.
Why use businesses approved by Better Consumer Choices?
The businesses in our membership voluntarily agreed to pre-screening through a 20 point check system which includes criminal and sex offender background checks. They did this in order to make it easier for consumers to recognize that they are a safe choice and care about consumer protection. Better Consumer Choices will continually monitor for fraud, abuse and theft and will suspend or terminate businesses no longer meeting our standards of safety and trustworthiness.
